May 31: San Jose Mercury News – Letters to the Editor – Herrera’s help on tower fight has been priceless
Rose Herrera has been very helpful to the concerned residents working with Verizon to find an alternate location for a cell tower in Evergreen. As a member of No Cell Tower near Evergreen Elementary School, I want to thank her for helping us understand the city planning process and arranging a meeting with Verizon for a constructive discussion, which most likely would never have happened without her assistance. A council member only has indirect influence on a planning issue like a cell tower zoning permit. So we appreciated that Herrera was willing to represent our group of more than 700 constituents and their families. (For more information, go to www.no-tower.org.)
I personally endorse Herrera for re-election in District 8 and appreciate her sensible positions on the many difficult economic decisions for San Jose, her support for our group in working with Verizon, and her goals for the future of District 8 and all of San Jose.

Herrera said she’s proud of her support of Measure B, which she believes offers sustainable, but fair, retirement benefits for city employees. She said savings from the measure will allow the city to preserve services and jobs.
She points to other accomplishments: In partnership with residents and the Save our Skatepark community group, the councilwoman said she worked to protect Lake Cunningham Park and keep the nation’s largest skate park open and staffed for residents and youth to enjoy. She said she led an effort to secure funding for the first phase of the VTA light rail extension to Eastridge Mall and improvements to Capitol Expressway and helped prevent water rate hikes for Evergreen residents. And, she said, her support of the city’s new outsourced graffiti program saves hundreds of thousands of dollars.

May 25: San Jose Mercury News- Letters to the Editor – Lift yourselves up out of the mud(slinging)
I am an active voting Democrat in District 8. My support for progressive-leaning causes is generally reliable and consistent. Yet I find the constant barrage of mudslinging and attempt at character assassination against Rose Herrera to be extremely distasteful. As a concerned resident of the city of San Jose, I call on those responsible to demonstrate a higher level of leadership. Recognize that pension costs are rising and realize the time for reform is now.
Spend time and effort to help restore the financial health of our city rather than the $100,000 to demonize the councilwoman because of her support for Measure B. This current path will only alienate voters who are otherwise friendly to your cause.

May 25: San Jose Mercury News – More than $1 million spent on fight over San Jose pension reform
Of the incumbents seeking re-election, none has faced a tougher battle than Reed ally and District 8 Councilwoman Rose Herrera. She’s raised $88,675 this year including a $1,000 personal loan and together with funds raised last year spent $94,343 this year toward her re-election.

May 17: San Jose Mercury News – Letters to the Editor – Herrera does not deserve unions’ scorn
So, the retribution that San Jose City Councilwoman Rose Herrera is getting from public employee unions because of her support for modest pension reform is “getting what she deserves” (Letters, May 15)? The pension measure on the June ballot represents very reasonable and long overdue reform. This is proof positive that we will never get meaningful concessions from public employee unions through negotiation. San Jose city employees represent 0.56 percent of the total population. It seems to me they are overly represented on the City Council. Thank you, Rose Herrera, for also representing the tax payers of San Jose (the 99.4 percent).
